Drakes Beach ↔ Point Reyes National Seashore

Sometimes you just need to see the ocean. So, we hopped in the car and drove west until we hit the Point Reyes National Seashore. We're still enduring triple digits here in the valley and spending some time in 60 degree temps on the coast sounded absolutely divine.

We've been wanting to explore this area for a while now--and wow, was it beautiful!

Our first stop was Drakes Beach...

This is the first beach I've seen with sandstone cliffs...

The landscape was absolutely stunning, even in the early morning light...

It was 8:00 in the morning and we had the entire beach to ourselves...

In the distance, we could see huge flocks of loons (we're talking thousands) flying across the water...

San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge

We made a quick stop at the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge on our way to the Point Reyes National Seashore. Next time, when we aren't in a race to beat morning rush hour traffic, we'll explore the area a little more.

Don't you just love the beautiful art at the info kiosk?

In the few minutes we were there, we saw a lot of shorebirds and wished we could stay longer!

Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge

We couldn't have picked a more beautiful day to drive through the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge auto tour. Then again, I find myself saying that a lot about our visits to the refuge because they are simply beautiful places full of nature and all its wonderfullness. (Yes, I'm aware that isn't technically a word. As an author, I often make up words to suit my writing needs :)

Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge!

What a beautiful day to visit the refuge!
